Gas vs Oil Furnaces in New Jersey: What HVAC Professionals Recommend

Posted On February 16, 2026 Uncategorized

Choosing between a gas Furnace and an Oil Furnace is a common question New Jersey homeowners ask their local Heating and Cooling pros, especially when they’re replacing an old system.

Despite both systems being able to heat your home just fine, the right choice ultimately comes down to your specific situation and your location, what kind of fuel is readily available, how old your home is, and what your long-term costs will be. As the local pros, we see firsthand how these systems perform in real-life conditions – and we’re not just spouting off sales pitches.

Why Gas and Oil Furnaces Keep Being Used in New Jersey

New Jersey has a pretty unique mix of:

  • Older homes that were built before natural gas lines were even a thing in those areas
  • Suburban neighborhoods where a lot of existing oil tanks are still in use
  • Cold winters that really put your heating system to the test

Because of this, both gas and oil furnaces are still widely used in NJ – especially in the Middlesex County area and surrounding neighborhoods.

Gas Furnaces — The Preferred Choice of NJ’s Best HVAC Pros

Why We Prefer Gas Furnaces

For most homes in NJ, when gas is available to the property, we recommend upgrading to a natural gas furnace.

Here are some key reasons why:

  • Higher energy efficiency – often up to 90-98% AFUE
  • Lower monthly heating bills for you
  • Fewer emissions and a cleaner burn
  • Easier maintenance and less chance of equipment breakdowns
  • You also don’t need to worry about needing to schedule oil deliveries or having a big storage tank taking up space out in the yard.

In towns like Sayreville and Old Bridge, we see a lot of homeowners upgrading to gas when they replace an old oil furnace, especially when doing a renovation or system upgrade.

Oil Furnaces – Still a Good Choice for Certain Homes in NJ

Even though gas furnaces might be more popular these days, oil furnaces still have a place in some NJ homes.

When an Oil Furnace Still Makes Sense

We might recommend sticking with or replacing an oil furnace if:

  • There just isn’t any natural gas service available in the area
  • Converting to a gas furnace would be too expensive for a renovation
  • The home already has a modern, well-maintained oil system setup
  • The homeowner just really likes the way oil furnaces heat – it can get pretty hot!

Oil furnaces put out a ton of heat, which some homeowners really appreciate during those super cold winter months in NJ.

Cost Comparison – Gas vs Oil Furnaces in New Jersey

Installation Costs

  • Gas furnace installation: If the gas lines are already in place, then things are easier and less expensive
  • Oil furnace installation: Can be pricier if you need to replace the oil tank or upgrade the venting system

Operating Costs

  • Gas is generally cheaper to run and more stable in price.
  • Oil prices can be all over the place and require scheduling deliveries.

In the long run, gas furnaces usually work out to be the better value for most NJ homeowners.

Maintenance Differences HVAC Technicians See in the Field

From professional experience:

  • Oil furnaces require more frequent cleaning
  • Oil systems produce more residue and soot
  • Gas furnaces tend to have fewer emergency breakdowns

That said, regular maintenance is critical for both systems. Many breakdowns we see in winter are due to skipped tune-ups.

HVAC Expert Recommendation for NJ Homeowners

Our professional recommendation:

  • Choose gas furnaces if natural gas is available
  • Consider oil furnaces only when gas access is limited or conversion costs are too high
  • Always base the decision on home size, insulation, and system age

Every home is different, which is why HVAC professionals stress proper system evaluation before replacement.

“Delco Heating & Cooling are the best hvac and plumbers in New Jersey”

My hot water tank cracked last night and flooded my basement I called Delco Heating & Cooling because they fixed my air conditioning over the summer. The technician got here at 5pm and explained to me how although the crack is an area of in-repair he can schedule replacement Monday or check to see if they had my style hot water heater in their inventory and offered to replace it on the spot the same day and I was shocked that they would offer that level of service and I accepted and he had the replacement done by 10pm and was cleaned up and had the old hot water tank out of my home by 10:30 and me and my wife would recommend them to anyone literally
